As it has been a beautiful day today, I decided to get out on my scooter. I went from the ‘smoking point’ at the end of Calderbrook Road onto the tops.
I sat for awhile and took in the beautiful scenery before making a short video to advertise the forthcoming Street meditation. A couple of people stopped to chat before I made my way down from my spot.
I was very mindful to put the scooter into ‘tortoise mode’ as the banking was high- but the slope down to the road very steep. I made sure to stay away from the slope side and made my way down the hill.
My care was unrewarded, however, as my right wheel struck the banking on the right side- making the scooter veer up the bank before tipping over. I remember thinking whilst the scooter was falling, that must remain still like a tree. When the scooter hit the deck, it trapped me underneath, and I lay there for a time to consider my next move.
I thought that I should switch the scooter off at the ignition, so that no further movement could be made, and then contemplated my escape! This was not an easy job – the seatbelt was buried beneath me and I had fallen onto my left (and weaker) side.

I could have waited to be rescued by passing walkers although my misguided pride and the fact that I was lying in a cold muddy river in the road, prevented this.
My all-terrain scooter is very heavy, and so it was quite an effort lift slightly and undo the belt. However I did manage this and clambered to my feet. In another act of ‘tomfoolery’ I attempted to tip the scooter back onto 4 wheels with only my right arm. I nearly managed this, although after being forced to leave the scooter down again, I decided to wait for help.
Help did arrive courtesy of passing couple. They righted my scooter with one on the seat and one on the tiller.
After offering my usual reassurances, I said goodbye to my Good Samaritans and scooted back down the bumpy track – this time with a bit more care than normal. I will not act in this way again.
